Reckonings

Reckonings traces the Japanese American redress movement — from its origins in the 1970s, through the landmark 1981 CWRIC hearings, to the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 — while also revealing how that history shaped the making of “Reckoning with Redress,” Full Spectrum Features' cinematic digital history project. Weaving together archival footage and testimony from the community hearings, Reckonings shows a movement that was neither simple nor unified: a community wrestling with silence, shame, generational divides, and disagreement over strategy, even as it found the collective courage to demand acknowledgment and repair. The film also surfaces histories often left out of the redress story, including the experience of Japanese Latin Americans incarcerated in U.S. camps. Told through the voices of scholars, activists, and the filmmakers themselves, Reckonings asks what it means to reckon honestly with the past — and why that reckoning still matters today.
